How Women Can Choose the Right Pistol

A Practical Guide from Emmaus Defense LLC

As a woman actively involved in the shooting sports—and a certified instructor with Emmaus Defense LLC here in Savannah—I meet women every week who are trying to answer one important question:

“What gun should I buy?”

Very often, they’ll follow it up with:

“Since we’re both women, I want to get the same pistol you use.”

I understand where that’s coming from—but here’s the truth:

Just because we are both women does not mean the same gun will work for both of us.

Choosing a firearm is personal. The best handgun for you depends on your body, your lifestyle, and your intended use—not someone else’s preference.

This guide is designed specifically for women in the Savannah area who are new to firearms or looking to make a smarter, more confident purchase.

Start With Purpose: What Will You Use the Gun For?

Before you even step into a gun store, you need clarity on one thing:

What is this gun going to be used for?

This matters more than brand, caliber, or price.

Common Uses We See in Our Savannah Classes:

  • Concealed carry for everyday self-defense

  • Home defense

  • Range training and skill development

  • Beginner competition shooting (USPSA or IDPA)

Each purpose leads to a different type of firearm.

For example:

  • A concealed carry pistol must be easy to hide under everyday clothing

  • A range or competition gun can be larger, heavier, and easier to shoot accurately

At Emmaus Defense LLC, we help students evaluate these tradeoffs based on real-life scenarios—not just theory.

Why Women Need a Different Approach to Concealed Carry

Men often have an easier time carrying the same gun every day due to consistent clothing styles.

Women? Not so much.

Between:

  • Athletic wear

  • Dresses

  • Business attire

  • Seasonal clothing

…the way a firearm fits into your daily life is constantly changing.

And yes—you can absolutely be practical and feminine.

But that reality means your firearm choice needs to be more intentional.

Fit Matters More Than Brand

If you’re relatively new to shooting and want one gun that can do a little bit of everything—self-defense, range work, and possibly competition—then the next question is:

Does the gun actually fit your hand and strength?

Here are the most important factors we teach our students to evaluate:

1. Trigger Reach: The Key to Accuracy

Trigger reach is the distance from the backstrap of the grip to the trigger.

A proper fit allows you to:

  • Place your palm firmly against the backstrap

  • Reach the trigger naturally

  • Press straight to the rear without shifting your grip

If your finger placement is off:

  • Your shots will be inconsistent

  • Your control will suffer

This is one of the first things we evaluate in our beginner classes in Savannah.

2. Slide Manipulation: A Non-Negotiable Skill

If you cannot confidently rack the slide, the gun is not right for you.

Period.

You must be able to:

  • Load the firearm

  • Clear malfunctions

  • Perform safety checks

And you must be able to do it under stress—not just in a calm environment.

This is one of the most common challenges we see with new shooters, especially those with smaller hands or less upper body strength.

3. Magazine Release: Important, But Trainable

Ideally, you should be able to drop the magazine without drastically changing your grip.

However, unlike trigger reach and slide manipulation:

  • This skill can be improved with training

  • Small grip adjustments can compensate

We coach practical workarounds during live-fire training at Emmaus Defense LLC.

4. Recoil: The Hidden Deal Breaker

Here’s a mistake we see all the time:

A woman chooses a small, lightweight pistol because it’s easy to conceal…

…but ends up hating how it shoots.

Remember this rule:

Smaller and lighter guns = more felt recoil

That “cute” little pistol may be:

  • Snappy

  • Uncomfortable

  • Difficult to control

And here’s the bottom line:

If you don’t enjoy shooting it, you won’t practice.

If you don’t practice, you shouldn’t carry it.

Confidence comes from repetition—and repetition requires comfort.

The Firearms Industry Is Finally Catching Up

For years, most handguns were designed with male shooters in mind.

But things have changed—especially in the last few years.

A Major Breakthrough

In 2018, Smith & Wesson introduced the Smith & Wesson M&P 380 Shield EZ.

This firearm was a huge step forward because it offered:

  • Easy-to-rack slide

  • Manageable recoil

  • More accessible grip size

We’ve recommended this pistol to many of our students in the Savannah area—it’s a great starting point.

When You Outgrow Your First Gun

As skills improve, some shooters begin to notice limitations in beginner-friendly pistols:

  • Lower capacity

  • Less refined trigger

  • Added safeties that can complicate operation

That’s not a flaw—it’s part of the learning process.

A Modern Solution: The Walther PDP F Series

In 2022, Walther Arms introduced the Walther PDP F Series.

This is one of the first pistols that truly re-engineered ergonomics for better fit.

Key advantages include:

  • Reduced trigger reach

  • Easier slide operation

  • Improved control access

  • Full-capacity magazine

  • Exceptional trigger performance

Unlike many “women’s guns” of the past, this is not a cosmetic redesign—it’s a functional improvement across the board.

From firsthand experience, it’s one of the most impressive options currently available.

The Emmaus Defense Approach: Training First, Then Buying

At Emmaus Defense LLC, we strongly encourage women to:

  • Try before they buy

  • Get professional instruction early

  • Focus on fit and function—not trends

Our goal is simple:

Help you become confident, capable, and safe—not just armed.

Final Thoughts: The Right Gun Is the One You Can Use Well

There is no universal “best gun for women.”

The right gun is the one that:

  • Fits your hand

  • Matches your strength

  • Works with your lifestyle

  • Allows you to train consistently

And most importantly:

It’s the one you can operate confidently under pressure.
